افتالمومیازیس شیوع جهانی پایینی دارد و اغلب موارد آن از کشورهای در حال توسعه گزارش شده ات و در سال های اخیر شیوع آن در ایران کاهش یافته است. در بسیاری از موارد گزارش شده، عامل ایجاد بیماری لارو مگس oestrus ovis می باشد. در بهار سال 1390، خانم 40 ساله ساکن روستا با سطح بهداشتی قابل قبول و بدون هیچ گونه بیماری چشمی زمینه ای و اختلال ایمنی با علائم کونژنکتیویت به درمانگاه چشم پزشکی بیمارستان آیت ا... روحانی بابل مراجعه نمود، که پس از معاینه با تشخیص افتالمومیازیس اکسترنال تحت درمان قرار گرفت. همه تعداد 7 عدد لارو مگس از قسمت قرنیه و کول دو ساک خارج گردید، سپس آنتی بیوتیک و کورتیکوستروئید موضعی تجویز شد. در معاینه مجدد پس از 2 روز چشم بیمار بدون علامت و آرام بود.
